Moodle: Using multiple accounts with MFA

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) will keep you logged in to Moodle on one browser for 30 days. Logging out of Moodle won’t remove your active logged in session. For users with more than one UAL account some extra steps are now needed to switch between accounts.

There are three options below that will let users move between accounts when using MFA to log in. For additional help with managing these issues, please raise a ticket using MySupport

Quickest

If you regularly use both staff and student accounts on Moodle, the simplest way to manage these two accounts is to use separate web browsers for each account (e.g. Chrome for staff, Edge for student).

This will keep each of your login sessions separate, and let you log in to Moodle with a single click for each account for 30 days on each browser. After this you’ll need to re-authenticate, and then your access will be set again for another 30 days.

Alternative for occasional use

If you use one account infrequently, you can use a private or incognito browsing session to log in to that account. This will ignore any login details entered in your regular browsing sessions, and let you access another account.

Opening a private browsing session

To find how to open a private browsing session, check our guide for common browsers.

Logging in to Moodle

In your private browser session, head over to the Moodle login page (https://moodle.arts.ac.uk)

Click the UAL Login button, then enter your UAL username and password

You’ll be prompted to authenticate your login using the Authenticator app

Enter the code from your browser window into your app, then follow the prompts to complete to login process

This session will stay active for as long as you have the private browsing window open. Once you close the window, you’ll have to go through the authentication process the next time you log in to the same account.

Logging out, then logging back in

If you need to fully log out of your session, you can use Microsoft 365 to remove any active MFA sessions in your web browser (this won’t affect Microsoft applications like Teams or Office)

Logging out

Open Microsoft 365 from the browser you usually use to access Moodle

Click your name in the bottom left, then click the Sign out link

Logging back in

Open Moodle. If you’re still logged in, click your profile icon in the top right, then select Logout.

Click the UAL login button, then select the account you’d like to log in as, or enter new login details

You’ll be prompted to authenticate your login using the Authenticator app

Enter the code from your browser window into your app, then follow the prompts to complete to login process
