Create  your own inclusive blended  learning design

Step one 

Review an existing synchronous session such as a three-hour teaching block previously delivered face-to-face or synchronously online. Divide it into content and contact components.

Content 

• Explain key concepts
• Present a brief
• Demonstrate a process etc.

Contact 

• Q&A to check understanding of key concepts
• Discuss the brief 
• Review students’ application of process etc.

Step two 

Consider how each component might be separated into two or more interlinking activities. These activities should engage students asynchronously with content. They should also provide feedback that informs an asynchronous or synchronous contact session. This will create a two activity design.  

Activity 1 (Asynchronous) 

• 1 hour activity, 3 days to complete 
• Students watch a video of the tutor explaining key concepts. They respond  to a  set of  questions  hosted on a Moodle quiz designed to test  their understanding. 

Activity 2 (Synchronous) 

• 1 hour activity, fixed time
• Tutor facilitates a Collaborate Ultra Q&A session. This session is to check understanding and deal with any misconceptions raised by the test results. There is also a discussion on the application of key concepts. 

Step three 

Ensure students have the opportunity to consolidate and build on their learning by including a follow-up activity. This will create a three activity design.

Activity 1 (Asynchronous) 

• 1 hour activity, 3 days to complete
• Students watch a video of the tutor explaining key concepts. They respond  to  a  set of  questions  hosted on a Moodle quiz designed to test  their understanding. 

Activity 2 (Synchronous) 

• 1 hour activity, fixed date and time
• Tutor facilitates a Collaborate Ultra Q&A session. This session is to check understanding and deal with any misconceptions raised by the test results. There is also a discussion on the application of key concepts. 

Activity 3 (Asynchronous) 

• 1 hour activity, 3 days to complete 
• Students reflect on the discussion. They post an entry to a Moodle forum in response to an open-ended question related to the concepts being discussed. 

Remember to consider which digital tools and spaces will be most appropriate for capturing and sharing feedback from each activity
