Inclusive Blended Learning Design – Knowledge building
In this post:
Summary
This three-activity design enables students to achieve a basic understanding of new knowledge in advance of a synchronous session. Through this design, students’ understanding can be checked, reinforced and developed through application, discussion and reflection activities.
Duration:
3 hours over 5 to 6 days
Learning outcomes:
- Explain the concept
- Apply the concept in practice
Activity 1: Orientation
- Time: 1 hour over 2 to 3 days
- Student interacts with: content
- Mode: Asynchronous
Activity steps:
- Students watch a short video of the tutor explaining a key concept, then respond to a set of questions to test their understanding
- The tutor uses the responses to assess the extent of students’ understanding to prepare for the next activity.
Suggested tools and spaces:
- Panopto can be used to record and publish a short video for students
- A Moodle Test can be used to present questions (e.g. multiple choice) to students and capture their answers
Activity 2: Application and discussion
- Time: 1 hour
- Student interacts with: peers, tutor
- Mode: Synchronous
Activity steps:
- The tutor re-states the concept and deals with any misconceptions raised by student test responses
- Students are split into groups to discuss application of the concept
- Whole class feedback & review of lessons learned.
Suggested tools and spaces:
- Collaborate Ultra breakout rooms can be used for group discussions
Activity 3: Consolidation
- Time: 1 hour over 2 to 3 days
- Student interacts with: peers, tutor
- Mode: Asynchronous
Activity steps:
- Students reflect on what they have learned from the session & are encouraged to review each other’s thoughts
- Students post any follow up questions to relevant topic in Q&A forum, so answers to questions can be shared with whole class.
Suggested tools and spaces:
- myblog or Moodle forum to capture student reflections
- Moodle forum for follow up questions.
